Blepharitis

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis (aka, "Bleph"), is an inflammation of the eyelid. Signs and symptoms include red, irritated, itchy eyelids, accompanied by scales resembling dandruff near the roots of the eyelashes. You may also notice a gritty sensation in your eyes, or that your eyelids/eyelashes are "glued together" in the morning when you wake up.

There are many causes of blepharitis, but it is generally not damaging or contageous. One of the most common causes is a blockage of the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes. Allergies are also a common cause, especially allergies to mascara or contact lens solutions.

How is it treated?

Blepharitis is usually able to be treated simply by practicing better hygiene. Washing the eyelids, eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair daily with baby shampoo is usually quite effective.

Occasionally, cases of blepharitis become severe enough to warrant antibiotics.
