Corneal Ulcer

What is a Corneal Ulcer?

Corneal Ulcers are a common eye problem that can be caused by micro-organisms found in vegetable matter, chemical injury, contact lenses, and infections. Entropion, dry eye, candida, and Herpes simplex (among many other viruses, fungi, or bacteria) can also cause corneal ulcer.

Corneal ulcers can be very painful, as the ulcers tend to expose nerves. They can also cause squinting, and may lead to loss of vision.

How is it treated?​

It is important not to try to self-treat a corneal ulcer, and allowing them to continue without treatment could lead to very serious conditions, such as a perferated cornea. And since there are many different causes of corneal ulcers, it is important to treat them with the correct kind of medication. Depending on the type and severity of the ulcer, antibiotic eyedrops and either eyedrops or oral medication for pain may be prescribed. If the ulcer is very severe, surgery may be required to prevent perforation of the cornea.
