Stye

What is a Stye?

A stye, or hordeolum, is an infection of the glands at the base of the eyelashes or eyelids. It appears as a small bump, visible both inside and outside of the eyelid, and is accompanied by minor swelling, pain, minor crusting of the eyelid, tenderness, and possible blurred vision.

Styes can be triggered by excessive eye-rubbing, sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and lack of hygiene.

How is it treated?

Left alone, a stye will normally resolve itself within 1-2 weeks, although with proper treatment, that time can be reduced to as little as 4 days. Sometimes styes are treated with antibiotics, and occasionally a doctor will lance a stye to hasten healing time.
